Lake Louise

Lake Louise, cradled by the majestic Canadian Rockies, is a symphony of natural splendor. Its turquoise waters, framed by snow-capped peaks, create a scene of unparalleled beauty.

About Lake Louise

Lake Louise's history is intertwined with the exploration and settlement of the Canadian Rockies. Indigenous peoples, notably the Stoney Nakoda, were the first to inhabit the region, drawn by its abundant wildlife and natural beauty. However, it was not until the late 19th century that Lake Louise gained wider recognition.

In 1882, Tom Wilson, a Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) guide, stumbled upon the lake while searching for a route through the mountains. He named it Lake Louise in honor of Princess Louise Caroline Alberta, the fourth daughter of Queen Victoria. The CPR later built a grand hotel, the Chateau Lake Louise, near the lake's shore, attracting tourists and adventurers to the area.

The early 20th century saw the rise of Lake Louise as a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts, with visitors flocking to hike, fish, and ski in its pristine surroundings. Over the years, the lake and its surrounding area have been designated as part of Banff National Park, ensuring its preservation for future generations to enjoy. Today, Lake Louise remains a symbol of the enduring allure of the Canadian wilderness, a place where history and natural beauty converge in perfect harmony.

Why is color Turquoise?

The striking turquoise color of Lake Louise's water is primarily attributed to the presence of rock flour, also known as glacial flour. Rock flour is created when glaciers grind rocks into fine particles as they move and scrape against the underlying bedrock. These fine particles, suspended in the water, scatter sunlight in a way that enhances the blue-green hues, giving the lake its distinctive color.
